A Hellenistic masterpiece: the Medici Aphrodite. Angel D. Numerous copies of both the Medici and Capitoline Aphrodite were produced in the Roman period. Judging only from the number of copies, it is generally accepted that the Capitoline was the most popular type followed by the Knidia and finally the Medici. First an examination of the copies, variants and quotations of each type is given to provide some background on the Medici and Capitoline. Next is a discussion of the dating of the pieces which has typically ranged from the fourth to the first centuries BC. An overview of a second century trend is presented to place both pieces in the second century, followed by a comparison of the Medici to the Telephos Frieze on the Great Altar of Pergamon and other known second century pieces such as the work of Damophon.

Aphrodite is leaning her left elbow on a tree -trunk; her left leg, which is not weight-bearing, is close to the right leg but somewhat advanced. The goddess is wearing a thin sleeved chiton, which appears to have slipped from her right shoulder and fits the body so closely that some parts — the stomach and legs, for example — appear to be naked. In an effective contrast to the transparent undergarment, the heavy masses of fabric from her mantle fall on the left to the ground, creating subtle interplay between the light marble and the dark folds of material.
Her outstretched left hand perhaps held a pomegranate, while her right hand rested on her hip. Eros is standing on the tree-trunk in a diagonal counter-movement to Aphrodite. His figure is that of a slender youth. There is great controversy about dating the statuette. The proposals range from the assumption that it is a Greek original of ca. The Greek sculpture on which it was based must have been created in the late 5th century BC by a successor of Phidias and served, particularly in Roman times, as the basis for numerous faithful and modified copies.

Isis-Aphrodite is a form of the great goddess Isis that emphasizes the fertility aspects associated with Aphrodite. She was concerned with marriage and childbirth and, following very ancient pharaonic prototypes, also with rebirth. Elaborate accessories, including an exaggerated calathos the crown of Egyptian Greco-Roman divinities emblazoned with a tiny disk and horns of Isis, heighten the effect of her nudity.
Figures depicting this goddess are found in both domestic and funerary contexts. Popular already in the 3rd to 2nd centuries B.

He obviously wanted to see me, but why? Had he had a change of heart? Was he ready to redraft our story? My curiosity is always stronger than my reason. At the next metro stop I switched lines, traveling east along this new plot twist. Did I really think the Film Guy had something worthwhile to tell me? Not really. In fact, my spur of the moment decision was mainly driven by a subplot that had been percolating since the last contact with the Film Guy….
It was in accompanying his decline to my invitation to a film premiere party. I easily fell under the charms of this terribly hot Greek god-like one he was even actually half Greek, destined to be godly.

So now, weeks after it was promised, is your chance to let me know who you would marry, who you would date, and who you would dump out of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Let me know in the comments and as always feel free to make substitutes! View all posts by Alison Doherty. Athena would be hard to live with — always right. Aphrodite would always cheat on you. Hera is no prize, but at least she understands what it takes to keep a marriage going. Marry — and never, ever cheat on!
She would be so hard to live with. Also, good call on not cheating on Hera. She knows how to get revenge. Definitely dump Aphrodite but I could go either way on Hera and Athena. The story of Nike was one of my favorites when I was in middle school and I think marrying Demeter is probably a safe bet.

Aphrodite [a] is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love , beauty , pleasure , passion and procreation. She was syncretized with the Roman goddess Venus. Aphrodite’s major symbols include myrtles , roses , doves , sparrows , and swans. The cult of Aphrodite was largely derived from that of the Phoenician goddess Astarte , a cognate of the East Semitic goddess Ishtar , whose cult was based on the Sumerian cult of Inanna.

Born from the foam in the waters of Paphos, on the island of Cyprus, Aphrodite has a couple of origin stories. According to Hesiod’s “Theogony,” she rose from the sea when the Titan Cronus killed his father Uranus and threw his genitals into the sea um, yikes. However she came into the world of Greek mythology, the Goddess of Love and Beauty is best known for her stunning aesthetic, but she’s also a powerful, immortal deity capable of stirring up romance among gods and mortals.

Aphrodite, as noted earlier see Tales of the Titanic , actually predated Zeus and the other Olympians. She rose from the sea foam created when Cronus—the father of the Olympians—threw Uranus’s severed genitals into the sea. Aphrodite was caught working just once. Athena spotted her working at a loom and complained that this was her domain. Greatly apologetic, Aphrodite immediately abandoned her work and never took it up again.
The goddess of love, lust, and mating never had to do a bit of work. Indeed, she had no other responsibility but to make love—and that she did with abandon. Aphrodite, who possessed a magic girdle that made its wearer an object of desire for everyone who saw her, was always happy to help young lovers.

The dust is blown off a powerful and much neglected part of our cultural heritage, writes Michael McGirr. Some time ago, the son of a friend of mine had reached a stage of life where he liked nothing more than to unsettle his father. Nearing the end of year 12, he thought he had at last found the means to put the old man well and truly off his cornflakes. He announced that he intended to go to university to study classics.
Classic is a word that has been so stripped of value that it has long been used to describe a style of jeans, soft-drink bottle or car. But the young man meant he wanted to spend time in the arcane and yet strangely familiar world of Greek and Latin language and literature. The classics are the attic of our culture. In them, you can find all kinds of fascinating and useful things, as well as important reminders of our family history, which have been allowed to gather dust.
